סמינר: The Undergraduate Airplane Design Program at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Prof. Eli Livne
Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics
University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

The undergraduate airplane design course (senior level) at the University of Washington's Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics is special in its scope, ambition, educational philosophy, and the resources allocated to it. Strong support from the Boeing company and other local aerospace companies, as well as experimental and construction assets in the Seattle area make it possible for 15-30 Aerospace Engineering seniors to conceive, design, build, and flight test a new small research-type UAV each year, supported by commercial quality wind tunnel tests and computational tools. The talk will present an overview of the course, its development, achievements, limitations, and plans for improvements. Some key lessons and thoughts (and a few stories) regarding airplane design education philosophy and practice will be shared, and will, hopefully, lead to an open discussion.
