The Adjoint Method (or the Method of Adjoints as it is sometimes called) is a very old performance analysis technique for performance analysis of guidance sensitivity. It has been widely used for performance estimates of conceptual design solutions in both astronautical applications as in guided missile design. The method presents the great advantage of providing quick results with relatively modest computational resources. Later, as computational power became widely available, the popularity of the Adjoint Method has somewhat diminished. New insights, both from the theoretical and practical perspective, have revived this method as a useful tool, next to the unavoidable Monte Carlo simulations, for providing not only numerical performance estimates, but also a better understanding of those estimates. The application of modern system theoretical techniques has significantly extended the application scope of the Adjoint Method.
This presentation is an overview of recent developments that extended significantly the application scope of the Adjoint Method beyond the classical framework. We will see how the Adjoint Method can be used for the case of non-Gaussian stochastic noise signals. Next, the extension of the Adjoint Method to hybrid (i.e. continuous and discrete jumps) models will be presented. This extension is, for example, applicable for models with multiple sampling rates. Finally, we take a look at the problem of evaluating the guidance loop performance under model uncertainty.
